What is SA 213 Pipes

SA 213 pipes are seamless alloy steel tubes that meet the ASME SA 213 or ASTM A213 standards for high-temperature applications like boilers and heat exchangers. These pipes are available in various grades, such as carbon steel (e.g., T11, T12) and stainless steel (e.g., TP304, TP316L), with specific grades suited for different mechanical properties and corrosion resistance levels. They are manufactured to be seamless for higher strength, and can be hot finished or cold drawn to achieve desired characteristics.

ASME SA 213 is a crucial specification for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubes used in demanding high-temperature environments. More detailed technical aspects include material composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing processes, and rigorous testing requirements.

Manufacturing Process

SA 213 tubes are manufactured exclusively by the seamless process and can be either hot-finished or cold-finished. The seamless construction is critical for high-pressure integrity.

Hot-finished: Manufactured above the recrystallization temperature, suitable for larger dimensions and high toughness applications.

Cold-finished: Produced by cold rolling or drawing, resulting in higher dimensional accuracy and superior surface quality.

Key Characteristics

  • Type: The standard specifically applies to seamless tubing, which provides better pressure resistance and dimensional accuracy compared to welded tubes in high-pressure, high-temperature scenarios.
  • Material Grades: It covers a wide range of alloy steel (T-grades) and stainless steel (TP-grades) materials, each offering specific performance characteristics.
  • Applications: Due to their excellent strength, toughness, and resistance to corrosion and creep at elevated temperatures, SA 213 tubes are widely used in the power generation, chemical, and petrochemical industries.
  • Dimensions: Standard sizes range from 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) to 5 inches (127 mm) in outside diameter, with minimum wall thicknesses from 0.015 to 0.500 inches, though other dimensions can be furnished.
